Watson's Dodd Information

Watson's Dodd, one of Wainwright's Eastern Fells is part of a group of fells called The Dodds, a series of similarly shaped dome shaped hills at the northern end of the Helvellyn range. Watson's Dodd deviates from this standard form somewhat due to Castle Rock, an imposing crag on the eastern side of the mountain. The most popular direct Watson's Dodd walk passes this feature on the way to the summit, while it is also possible, though less common, to climb the hill from Deepdale.

Wainwright walkers often complete Watson's Dodd in conjunction with the other Dodds. One such circular route that completes five Wainwright's from a Wainwright Fells Map begins and ends at High Row. From this point, a path partially following the Old Coach Road before climbing Clough Head. After the path continues to Great Dodd, the fells surrounding Deepdale, Watson's Dodd, Stybarrow Dodd and Hart Side are completed in turn. The path then returns to High Row by way of Dowthwaitehead.

When reaching the highest point of a Watson's Dodd walk, there area excellent views of many of the Lakeland fell groups, particularly Skiddaw and the Coledale Fells to the north and northwest.

Further detail on Watson's Dodd walks and walking in The Dodds can be read about in Book One, The Eastern Fells, by Alfred Wainwright, a volume of the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells.
